Manage 4K Display Scaling

»» 04.OCT.2017 / updated: 12.DEC.2021/

Introduction:

There are users who would continue the work at home, started at the office, but the home monitor has a resolution of 4K, which can be 3840×2160 pixels, but the desktop monitor has only HD, ie it is capable of displaying only 1920×1080 pixels, so you have to use a magnifying glass to see the icons and the text that was perfect in HD on the office.

Quick Tip: Este posibil să reduceți rezoluția monitorului dvs. 4K? (Faceți clic pe linkul Start Menu / Settings / System / Display din partea stângă jos a ecranului).

There are two ways to solve this problem:

Below is a description for newer and older versions of Windows 10. You can click the link that interests you most:

A.) – PART ONE: Start the program in compatible mode. (nou)...

B.) – PART TWO: Create a manifest file (old)...

Quick Tip: The second solution, "Create a manifest file", can only be applied to the first versions of Windows 10 (old). The first solution is simpler, as newer features have been added to Windows 10 patches that allow high DPI embedded settings, where you can change the default settings.

A.) – PART ONE: Start the program in compatible mode.

1.) – Right-click the icon of the program you want to edit (such as Photoshop) on your desktop (or where it is).

2.) – Select the "Properties" link from the mouse menu that appears.

link Properties

3.) – Click the "Compatibility" button in the menu at the top of the window with the left mouse button.

4.) – Select "Change high DPI settings" at the bottom of the page.

high DPI settings

5.) – Select the "Overwrite high DPI scaling behavior" checkbox below.

6.) – Select the "System (Enhanced)" link from the drop-down menu.

high DPI

7.) – Finally, click the "Apply" and "OK" buttons.

Finalizing:

Start the program to see the changes. If it still doesn't look right, you can try another drop-down menu option:

1.)Application: Uses the DPI settings of the monitor.

2.)System: This magnifies everything (image may be blurry)..

Finally:

B.) – PART TWO: Create a manifest file.

Attention! Reduce screen resolution only after reading the entire article! Enable, change or set in the registry base only at your own risk! Improper settings can cause system error!

Do the following:

Use the following trick to tell the system what settings should be taken automatically, regardless of whether the resolution in the office was lower than at home.

I did so

  1. Simultaneously pressed the Windows + R buttons on the keyboard.
  2. I entered the regedit command in the Run window.
  3. In the database I have searched for: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > SideBySide.
  4. In this window, clicked with the right mouse button in an empty space.
  5. I hold my mouse over the New.
  6. In the small window that appeared, clicked with the left mouse button on the DWORD (32-bit) Value.
  7. Created a New Value (#1).
  8. This New Value (#1), renamed into PreferExternalManifest.
  9. Then clicked on it with the right mouse button and chose Modify from the mouse menu.
  10. In the edit window that appeared, I changed the value 0 (zero) to 1 (one), and selected the Decimal radio button.
  11. Finally, clicked on OK button, and closed the registration database.

Let's create a file called manifest

You must disconnect or restart your computer for to take effect.

Finally

  • Copy the contents of the manifest file:
  • Copy to Notepad and save it as Photoshop.exe.manifest in the Photoshop folder. C: \ Program Files \ Adobe \ Adobe Photoshop CS6 (64-bit).
  • Enter it in the notepad

Of course, for other programs give another name. For example:

    1. Open Office: „soffice.exe.manifest”
    2. Notepad++: „notepad++.exe.manifest” etc.

    Error option

    1. Do not use the original program icon from your Desktop, create a new one. For example, in the C: \ Program Files \ Adobe \ Adobe Photoshop CS6 (64 Bit) folder, right-click on the Photoshop.exe file, and choose the Send / Desktop (create shortcut) link from the popup menu.
    2. If it does not work, check the registration database if the name, the value, and the decimal mark are correct.
    3. Older Windows operating systems, older versions of programs, may not work with this solution.
    4. Restart the computer.
    5. Enter the name of the pre-named program file correctly. For PhotoshopPro, you do not write Photoshop simply, but also type Pro.
    6. If it sends the error: "The program can not start because missing a file on the computer" reinstall the program.

    END
