SSD or HDD

Secrets for defragmenting HDDs and SSDs. What is the difference between the two? SSD does not require defragmentation unlike HDD! On the contrary, you can optimize only older hard drives, but SSDs can sometimes require maintenance, which can be done occasionally with the Trim utility to repair damaged blocks, but that's not our job either, optimization is done automatically with the built-in program in the Windows system.

HDD (winchester): In the years of Windows XP there was only HDD, ie hard drives with moving parts, but with the introduction of Windows 10 and Windows 11, most computers included fast SSD instead of slow HDD data storage. The HDD (hard disk drive) stores data on a plate (or more) with a magnetized layer on which a rotating writer / reader head writes or reads. Because there is sector-level writing / reading, if there is not enough space it will skip the already occupied sectors. This is called a fragmented file that can cause the hard disk to slow down.

HDD: Need to defragment the hard disk drive? : The answer is definitely: Yes!

SSD: Need to defragment the SSD? : The answer is definitely: No!

SSD (solid-state drive): A chip-based drive based on flash technology, it has no moving parts, which uses memories, store data in semiconductor cells, so it is less vulnerable than the traditional hard drive, works silently, fills the data evenly and does not produce heat, so no strong cooling is required.

Microsoft engineers have configured the Windows 10 and Windows 11 system so that storage types are properly identified by programming optimization. The Trim feature built into the system runs automatically, usually performing weekly SSD checking, so there is no need to install and run an external program.

Verification:

To check one or more drives (SSD / HDD) built into the computer, press the Windows-Logo + R buttons on the keyboard simultaneously and press ENTER. In the Run window that appears, enter the defrag command in the search box, and then press Enter.

In the window that appears, click the Defragment (or Optimize) button.

In the drive optimization window, you will see the type of HDD or SSD. The degree of fragmentation of the traditional HDD is still indicated by a percentage (%). For the SSD, click Optimize.

Quick Tip: If you click the SSD optimization button, only a short message appears, or the command line appears for just a moment, because the utility is smart enough to manage virtual hard disks.

Manual SSD intervention is useless because it is optimized by the Windows system approximately weekly, but if you want to check it manually, you can do it at any time without data loss.

Verification program:

After installing or upgrading the system, you can use an external utility to make sure that the SSD is working properly, or if it has not cleared any optimization settings after the upgrade. Check with the SSD Fresh 2021 system optimization program.

After startup, the program automatically checks which optimization features are enabled or disabled. SSD loading, such as saving an 8 + 3 file name, or hibernating, defragmenting boot files can only be disabled with a single mouse click. The analysis compiles a list of the negative programs that cause the greatest writing load, which is why they wear out prematurely.
