Windows 8.1 Hyper-V Virtual Machine: To test earlier versions of Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, or the next Windows 10, or free Linux system, no need to install any external program (a lot of programs installed, slows computer). In Windows 8, are implemented very useful new features, including virtual machines and supporting functions. In Windows Server, has been previously used but is now free for Windows 8 so that anyone can create their own virtual machine at any time.


  • 1.) - BIOS must support virtualization, the computer hardware Hyper-V virtualization.

  • 2.) - At least 2 GB RAM, and 64-bit processor that supports a second level address translation (Slate).

  • 3.) - This function is supported only by newer processors. Hyper-V does not work on old computers.

I did it so:

I opened Control Panel and foremost we chose the following options:

  • 1.) - I clicked on the link, left, Programs and services.

  • 2.) - Then, in another window Activation-deactivation Windows services.

  • 3.) - In the next window, I activated the Hyper-V and restarted the computer.

After reboot:

  • 4.) - In the start screen, click on Hyper-V Manager icon.

  • 5.) - To create the virtual machine, I clicked on the link New, then chose the Virtual Machine ... link.

  • 6.) - In the next window chose settings and then click on Finish.

  • 7.) - On the top Action menu, I clicked on the Start link to start the virtual machine.

  • 8.) - Finally, click with right mouse button on the virtual machine and chose link Connect ...

  • 9.) - It started to install Windows 8.

  • 10.) - It took about 10 minutes, including restart computer times.

More Details:

For creating Microsoft Windows 8 Hyper-V Virtual Machine do the following:

  • 1.) - Click on Desktop, with right mouse button, and select Customize.


  • 2.) - On the top, select Control Panel.

  • 3.) - Control Panel appears. Click Programs and Features ...

  • 4.) - Then, Turn Windows features on or off.

  • 5.) - Select the checkbox Hyper-v and click OK.


  • 6.) - The dialog window allows you to view how long times during this process (a few seconds).

  • 7.) - An information window will appear. Click the Restart Now button below.

After reboot

In order to do step two in creating Microsoft Windows 8 Hyper-V Virtual Machine, after reboot, requires launch the Hyper-V Service Manager.

Unfortunately, only from the Start Screen can launch this service. Drag the slider below on the right side of the screen. (In Windows 8.1, scroll down Metro interface).

  • 1.) - Among on the Start Screen icons fixed, we can find Hyper-V Manager. Click on it.

  • 2.) - On the right side of the device manager, click on the New button to the left mouse button, then the pop-up menu, select Virtual Machine ... link.

  • 3.) - You should then see a new window with the virtual machine settings in preparation. You can leave the default settings, in this case, click Finish. If you simply want to change, click Next and enter your personal settings manually.


  • 4.) - Default virtual machine folder base is C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V\, but in this example, I saved on drive D:\, and renamed to Windows 8. Click Next and enter additional settings.

  • 5.) - In the next window Generation, mark the first Generation check box.

In the Installation Options window, there are several possibilities for selection. System can be installed later, but if you want to install immediately, select the appropriate action.

If previously, you burned your ISO to bootable DVD, insert your disk, and select the Physical CD/DVD drive.

In this example, we deal with the ISO file, to install Windows 8, but can be any other system above.

  • 6.) - If we have chosen, click on the Finish button.

  • 7.) - Information window appears, summarizing the settings. Click the Finish button.

  • 8.) - Progress indicator appears where you can monitor the addition of AC network. (few seconds).

  • 9.) - As is shown below, appears the virtual machine in Hyper-V Manager. For now, off.

- To use a virtual machine, to be started.

  • 10.) - In the top menu bar, click on Action, and then, on the drop-down menu, on Start link.

  • 11.) - When enabled, it will write Run.


(If you do not have time, or decide later, what system want to install, close all windows. Make it ready for virtual machine. Then we take possession, when we want to.)

  • 12.) - To install the system immediately, click the right mouse on the virtual machine and select Connection.

  • 13.) - If we did everything right, the installation begins.
